Bain J. Farris
President and CEO
Bain has diverse management experience in the fields of health care and health insurance. Bain has over 25 years of executive leadership experience in Catholic health care. Prior to joining Exempla, Bain served on the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System (SCLHS) senior leadership team and managed a variety of complex financial and operational initiatives in SCLHS hospitals. He served as the Interim CEO for St. James Healthcare in Butte, Montana. He also served as the Site Administrator for Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas.Bain also served as President and CEO of the $1 billion Daughters of Charity Health System, where he oversaw business operations and strategic direction for five hospitals and medical centers spanning the California coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Prior to that he was Executive Vice President for Anthem, the Blue Cross Blue Shield plan that began in Indiana and became Wellpoint. He also served as President and CEO of the 650-bed St. Vincent Hospital and Health Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, the largest hospital in the Daughters of Charity Health System (now Ascension Health). During his time at St. Vincent, he was involved in the hospital's relocation; and as CEO he oversaw a $140-million addition to the hospital. Bain received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Marian College in Indianapolis and his MHA from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.
Barb Jahn, BSPT, MHS, NHA
Chief Operating Officer
Barb Jahn's career with Exempla Healthcare spans two decades. She earned her Bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Northwestern University and after working for Saint Luke's Hospital in Phoenix, began her career at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital as a physical therapist in 1985. She was quickly promoted to Director of Physical Therapy and served in various roles at both Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital and Exempla Lutheran Medical Center. Prior to her current position, Barb was the Vice President of Performance and Clinical Excellence, and at one time served as the system director for Case Management at both hospitals. Currently she's responsible for Emergency Services, Imaging, Case Management, Lab/Pathology, the Pharmacy, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the library. During her time at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, she has played an integral part in designing performance excellence functions that result in a culture of patient safety.
Mary Shepler, RN, BSN, MA
Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer
As the Chief Nursing Officer of Saint Joseph Hospital, Mary oversees all nursing operations including the general medical / surgical and critical care units, Women & Infants Care, Cardiovascular nursing services and the Professional Nursing Practice and Education program. She is responsible for the departments of Respiratory/Pulmonary Therapy, Performance Improvement and Clinical Informatics. Prior to her current position, she was the Chief Clinical Informatics Officer and Director of Performance Improvement for Exempla Lutheran Medical Center, where she was responsible for working with the clinical departments and Information Systems & Technology in the design and implementation of clinical information systems. Mary began her career with Exempla Healthcare over 20 years ago when she started as a registered nurse at Lutheran Medical Center. During her 20 year career at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center she also served as interim Chief Nursing Officer; director of Clinical Information Systems & Technology; and director of Critical Care, Cardiovascular and Neuroscience. Whether implementing clinical information systems or performance improvement initiatives, Mary always emphasized patient safety elements, evidence-based practices, clinical outcomes, and patient and staff satisfaction. Mary received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Northern Colorado and her master's degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix.
Shawn Dufford, MD, MBA
Vice President, Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer
Shawn Dufford, MD, MBA, joined Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital as the Vice President, Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer in June of 2011. Prior to this role Shawn served as the Medical Director of Perioperative Services for Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital and the Physician Director of Performance Improvement for Kaiser Colorado. Shawn worked with Colorado Permanente Medical Group from 2005-2011 as a staff Anesthesiologist and continues in that role on a part time temporary basis. Preceding this career Shawn was a flight instructor and corporate pilot and then spent nine years as a firefighter and paramedic in the Denver area. Shawn completed a Surgery Internship and Anesthesia Residency at the University of Colorado and earned an MBA from Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver.
Vice President, Finance
As the Vice President of Finance, Brad Ludford is responsible for all aspects of financial management and strategic planning. Brad supervises the operating and capital budgets for Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital and oversees strategic planning and site management scorecard reporting. Brad is involved in key managed care contracting decisions, marketing plans, business development, pay practice decisions, purchase service contracts and cost analysis efforts. Brad also has leadership responsibility for payer strategies and legislative affairs.Brad joined Exempla Healthcare in 2000 as Vice President of Finance at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center and then moved to Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital as Vice President of Finance. Before joining Exempla Healthcare, Brad spent seven years with Centura Health, departing as the Assistant Vice President of Finance. Brad's prior positions at Centura included manager of decision support, senior financial analyst, cost analyst and budget analyst. He also has experience in tax and public accounting.Brad received his bachelor of science degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
William Gould, M.S., CEBS, SPHR
Vice President, Human Resources
William "Bill" Gould joined Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in August of 2012 to serve as its Vice President of Human Resources. Bill's 13 years of leadership experience in the healthcare industry ranges from community-based organizations to large integrated health systems in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Gould has a history of driving process and performance improvement through Lean management. He has led and supported many organization-level change initiatives including rapid mergers and acquisitions, performance management, strategic health and benefits plan design, workplace safety and wellness, and executive and physician total compensation programs. Gould's leadership experience also includes marketing and communications, hospitality services, and extensive experience in labor relations administration. Bill holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Wyoming, and a Master of Science in Organization Leadership and Human Resource Management from Regis University. He maintains several professional certifications and designations including the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), and is a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
Sister Melissa Camardo
Vice President of Mission and Sponsorship
Sister Melissa is responsible for nurturing a mission and values-driven culture and developing activities and programs that insure the continuation of the spirit of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth within Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital (ESJH). She is responsible for Spiritual Care, Parish Nurse project, and Catholic Identity, and is actively involved in Ethics, Community Outreach, Language Interpretation Services, and other Mission Services of the hospital. She has been at ESJH since 2001, first as coordinator of the Baby Bootique community outreach program then as manager of the Entry-Level Workforce Development program prior to her current role. Sister Melissa first considered a vocation as a Sister after spending time in Honduras to help build a school in a remote village during her sophomore year of college. In addition to her experience in Honduras, her strong interest in other cultures and love of international service work led her to Mexico during her senior year. These experiences made her realize that she wanted to devote her life to helping others in need as a way to connect her faith and daily life. Upon graduation from Duke University with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Sister Melissa came to Denver to work as a full-time volunteer in a non-profit, job skills training program for low-income women. It was in Denver that she met the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth and joined the community in 1998.
Alwin F. Steinmann, MD, FACP
Chief of Academic Medicine
Dr. Steinmann came to Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in October, 2010 as the new Chief of Academic Medicine and Designated Institutional Official for the residency programs. He previously worked at Albany Medical College, where he was on faculty for 23 years and served as the internal medicine residency program director for 13 years. Dr. Steinmann cites the high quality of the residency programs and Saint Joseph’s commitment to the graduate medical education mission as key factors in accepting this position. He is an active member of the American College of Physicians (Colorado Chapter) and the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) / Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM). In 2011 he was elected to the APDIM national Council and chairs the AAIM Advocacy Committee.
