Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Your baby deserves the best care possible, and that is what Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital provides. Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is located near the Mother/Baby Unit. The security of having your baby nearby is comforting when you baby needs special care and support.
Our NICU is a Level IIIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with the ability to care for all sick infants, including the extremely premature. We are recognized as having some of the best outcomes in the state.
Premature babies and critically ill newborns receive the highest level of care from our specially trained NICU teams which include board certified neonatologists, masters trained neonatal nurse practitioners, dedicated neonatal nurses, pharmacists and special therapists. The hospital is staffed around the clock with neonatologists who are pediatricians with three additional years of training in newborn pediatrics, and our neonatologists are physically present in the hospital around the clock, seven days a week. They have expertise in complications and providing specialized medical care for newborns. In addition to neonatologists, special care is provided by neonatal nurse practitioners who are on duty 24 hours a day. These practitioners are registered nurses who have additional education and experience in the care of sick newborns as well as ongoing care of newborns. This NICU team will provide comprehensive care for your baby. We also have access to a full range of pediatric medical subspecialties including surgery and cardiology.
Parents are welcome in the NICU 24 hours a day. The NICU philosophy is family centered and you are encouraged to take an active part in caring for your baby. Sometimes a mother is medically ready to leave the hospital, but her baby needs additional care. Families of these NICU infants can stay in one of our guest rooms at The Parent Place at no charge, based on availability, as long as their baby is a patient of our hospital. This allows the parents to be close to their baby at all times.
